The short stems and large flowers make an ideal ground cover with blue/violet flowers resting on beds of narrow, sword shaped green leaves. Valuable to the gardener as a showy understory, woodland, edging plant or in a rock garden. Tends to form dense colonies and can be used to replace nonnative invasives such as vinca, ajuga and liriope in the landscape. It is a Northeastern U.S. native
